Fernando Camacho,
   Certified Canine Behaviorist and Trainer;

When most people think about getting a dog they imagine walking side by side in the park, sunny afternoons playing fetch in the yard and peaceful evenings curled up together on the couch. Very few imagine being pulled mercilessly down the street, non-stop barking and chewed up belongings. Unfortunately, many dog owners are faced with a number of unexpected behavior problems that quickly eclipse the everyday pleasures that come with sharing your life with a dog.

So, how can things go so wrong? Most of the time it’s just a simple matter of miscommunication, which can be easily fixed if we just learn to think more like a dog. Now I’m not saying we should start sniffing butts and try to lick those hard to reach places. What we really need to do is to put aside our human way of thinking and try to get inside our dog’s head so we can truly understand why he does what he does. Once you learn to think like a dog and understand the reasons for his behaviors (both good and bad) you will be on your way to having a happy, well balanced pooch.

The number one reason why people feel forced to give up their four legged friend is behavior problems. A little annoying behavior exhibited by your dog now could very quickly turn into a major problem that could jeopardize your future together. Whether it’s jumping up when people come to the door or major separation anxiety, it’s worth addressing the issue and having a happier, well balanced dog, as well as a more peaceful life together.

Fernando is certified in dog behavior and training from the Animal Behavior College. In addition to doing private in home behavior consultations he also works here at Rover Ranch as a dog handler and caretaker. Feel free to speak with Fernando about any issues with your dog the next time you stop by Rover Ranch or speak with someone there about scheduling a private in home consultation.

Ted Blagman,
   Certified Canine Behaviorist;

I am a certified dog trainer from ABC (Animal Behavioral College). I specialize in behavioral issues.

My main goal is to help people better understand their dogs. The way I approach all aspects of dog training is through the dog's vantage point. I find that the majority of issue's or behavioral problems that people have with their dogs, usually stems from people not understanding their dogs basic needs and desires. We as humans tend to treat our pets as if they were people. While it is good to share that kind of love with your dog it is important to understand that the psychology behind a dog’s behavior is totally different than our own.

There are many different methods of dog training, and I do not classify myself one way or the other. I look at each situation separately and then tailor my approach to what I feel is the best way to handle the individual situation. I feel it is best to keep an open mind when it comes to dog behavior. What works with one dog will not necessarily work on another. I always focus on the energy that the owner’s share with their dogs. Many people will unknowingly pass on their fear or anxiety to their dogs.

Working with dogs has profoundly changed my life. It has not only given me insight into the minds our four legged friends, but it has also helped to lead me to a greater understanding of human behavior. I believe that it is never too late to change a dog's behavior as long as the owner is willing to let go of the past.
